REPORT ON YEAR’S OPERATION^

A report on the work (Tone ami tin progress of the Electrical Department for the ye.ar ended March 31. was presented as follows by the Florpugli Electrical Engineer, Mr W ~T. Dawson, to the council meeting last evening:—

Revenue.-—The total revenue for the sale of current and rent of substation was £32,729 Ids 4d.

j Consumers Connected.—There were 1909 service connections with borough (reticulation and 108 to the Kamo rej tk-ulatioii, making a. total of 2077. j Mayipuun Load, on Ays tern. —The .maximum load recorded during the year tyap 001 k.v.a. Tills load was registered on July J, 1929, at 5.30 p.m. Unit Consumption.—The unit output registered on, the wattrmetor for the same period’ was: 2,546,730* and the maximum registered in, one day was S-,710 units This, reading was taken for the 24 hours-ending at 8 a.m. on July 3. 1929. Street Lighting and Extensions.— During -the year lb additional street lights were installed) making a, total of 257. These- were erected in- the following streets: Cairnfield Road, one ■light;: Powhki Avonyo, two lights;, 'Grey- Street, one light; Wallace Street, two lights; Cameron, and Walton iStr.eets junction, one light on. special time switch; Bank ‘ Street, opposite Town Hal] righbof-way, one light,*; ■M;eroer and Elizabeth Streets junction, one light; and, Donald Street, one light. Community Lighting.—ln all 87, community lights have been installed in Bank and Cameron Streets.

.Sub:station. Equipment. —Tlio following important additions wore made to the plant in the sub-station; Two ne\y panels on the high tension switchboard,, earthing relays fitted' to all high tension. circuits and. an artificial earthing transformer installed, a new voltage regulator yms installed and the old rognlator connected to the Manna feeder to act as a.-, line, booster, tayo ventilators were built into the east wall of the building for cooling purposes.

Reticulation.'—The following additions and alterations were made to the reticulation:—High tension armoured' and lead covered cables: Two from sub-station to junction of James and: Dent Streets’; one from sub-station to ibovatt’s mill, Lower Cameron Street;, one from, sub-station to junction of Station Road; and WaVton Street; one h.t. street lighting cable under railway bridge, Walton Street; two Lt. feecjer cables under railway bridge, Walton Street. Total, length of underground cable laid, 2,140. yards Aerial Distribution.—The bare copper conductors, in Bank Street between Hunt, Street and. Manse. Street were taken down and triple-braided insulated cables installed.. To improve- the voltage in the Kensington and Mairtown districts- the old feeders are being gradually replaced with heavier cables. From the junction of James; and Dent Streets to the junction, of Norfolk Street and Pentland Road was completed this year. Two .100 k.v.a, transformers with lightning protective equipment were installed, one at Loyatt’s mill, and the other in Station; Road to supply the railway workshops.

Extensions to the reticulation were made to the following streets; Wallace Street, Haranui Street and Poiowini Avenue lo the Atlantic Union Oil' Company’s premises. i Additional phases wore erected as follows: Brighton Bond, one phase; King, Street, one phase; Djnniss Avenue, cult phase; Wallace Street, ope phase; and Second Avenue, one phasp.

The lines in the fallowing streets were rebuilt and now poles erected ,where necessary: Huapai Street, tlirqo polos; Caflor’s- Avenue, line extended 100 yards and two poles erected; Norfolk Street, two poles; Neil Street, two terrpinai poles; Victoria Bridge, one polo; Cameron Street, 'three poles; Bank Street, two. poles: Water Street;, right-of-way rebuilt and three new poles erected; Dent Street, lino rebuilt; Station. Hoad, iron poles taken, out and line rebuilt; Woods’ Hoad; line rebuilt; Deveron Street, line, rebuilt; Sea View Avenue, line rebuilt; Walton Street, two poles replaced; Clyde Street, three poles replaced; Albert Street, one pole renlaced; Hate a and Banff Streets, line altered to suit concrete footpaths; and Lupton’s Avenue, platform erected anil static condenser installed.

Meters.—A total of i1,7 ( .>2 meters are now installed and in commission.

House Wiring. A considerable amount of house wiring was done during tin* year, but the sales of appliances lime gone back very much since the closing of the showroom, •only 12 ranges being- sold as against: 27 the previous year. Electric Eanges.—Electric ranges to the number of l.'ll pre now in service in the borough. Motors.—There are 2211 motors in commission, with a total horse-power of 1,0(0, Temporary lighting installations and decorations were erected during the year for tin* Dairy and Fire Brigade conferences, Xcw Pole and Cable Yard. —A start has been made with, the fencing around the new yard and this I hope to have completed soon.
