BOROUGH WORKS

REPORT FOR APRIL. At. the meeting of the Whaugarei Borough Council last night the engineer presented the following report on worts carried out during the month of April;— Road repairs have been done in Alain’s Avenue, Cairn field Road, Parua Bay Road, Dundas Road, Ewing’s Road, Fourth Avenue, Alorningside Road, Railway Road, King Street, Hate a Street, Grey Street, Norfolk Street. Trenches on footpaths and roadways have been repaired in Walton Street, Vim; Street, James Street, Hank Street and Mill Road. The mower has cut the grass on most of the streets and the whole has been raked up and burnt. The footpath in Kent Road was made up and channel graded, also a crossing put in. for the High .School. An arrangement was made with the County fjouncil to carry out work in connection with Alt. Pleasant Road storm water, and the metalling of about seven chains of roadway, the County Connell paying'.;! proportion of the cost. This work is at present at a standstill on account of the rain. The new road put in by Messrs Hoey Bros, on the Morningside estate was taken over by the borough. The concrete kerb and channel in Dent Street has been completed and the. roadway and footpaths made up. Fence- repairs were carried out at Kensington Park. The pumps at the pumping station have been ■overhauled and arc now in p-ood order. I am expecting the new wheel for the road roller to arrive any day, when it will immediately be put on the engine, as the present broken one is very unsatisfactory, A stage was erected and decorated for holding the Anzae service, but on account of the rain was not used. All the timber was lent by the Whaugaroi Timber Company , and returned again. Any damaged was taken by the borough, as use can be made of it.

Drainage.—During the -heavy rain I had the -sowers inspected and in nearly all eases they were running clear and no cases of overflowing wore reported. Branch drain connections have been put. in as required. Waterworks.—All general routine work in connection with the waterworks has been attended to and everything is in good order. Now the dry season has finished, and there is no likelihood of a shortage of water, I propose to empty the- southern portion of the old reservoir so that Mr Worley and I -can htjve a- thorough inspection made- of it, and we will then report upon the necessary repairs to same. A start will be made- to lay the 12in. pipes from Bust Avenue corner to W-hau reservoir as soon as sufficient' fittings arrive for the first length, and these I expect next week.

Cemeteries. —-Both the cemeteries are tidy and in good order. Parks and Reserves. —The work on the parks and reserves has been attended to and all grass and paths kept tidy. Trees on streets have had' attention. One dead one will be replaced in season. Plants have been raised,-on the Ivenington section for planting out in the various bods in the Triangle, Kensington Park and Rurumoki Road, which work is in hand now. Arrangements have been made to get soil for top-dressing and sowing on Central Park, which will be done as- soon as rain stops. All other routine work has been carried out. Permits have- been issued during the month for buildings estimated to coat £5555.
