SPECTACULAR DARING

MOTOR HURDLING TRAGEDY. (Received 10 am.) LONDON, May 4. John Miller, a well-known motor boat racer and the originator of motor hurdling, which he was endeavouring to popularise in Britain, was killed in the presence of his wife and two daughters, his brother and hundreds of spectators at >St. Helen'®. Miller had a floating hurdle composed of planks, at which he rushed his speed boat, aiming to force the boat up prior to shooting over the obstacle. The onlookers begged Miller not to-attempt the f eat, owing to the danger.

Miller dashed at the hurdle at terrific speed and caused the boat to leap six feet. A terrific explosion followed and Miller collapsed. He was terribly injured in the head by fragments of the flywheel which flew off owing to the engine racing, Miller having failed to shut off while the boat was in mid-air.
