CRIMINAL SESSION. (Per Press Association. —Copyright.) WELLINGTON, Monday. . The criminal session of the Supreme Court opened today before Mr Justice Blair. True bills were returned against Reginald Car Rex, indecent assault and exposure; Patrick James Michael Heffron, breaking, entering and theft; George Frederick Murphy, breaking and entering; William John Byrne indecent assault; Norman Erie Walker, theft and receiving; Ada Frances Walker, receiving; James Burman and Walter Sheriffs Henness, alias Fraser, robbery with violence.

SERIOUS MENACE. REMARKS BY CHIEF JUSTICE. (Per Press Association. —Oopyrlght.7 PALMERSTON N., This Day. Reference to the increasing number of motor fatalities was made by the Chief Justice, Sir M. Myers, in his charge to the Grand Jury at the opening of the Supreme Court session. Commenting on two cases for trial, involving the deaths of three persons, ho stated that such fatalities were becoming all too frequent and very, very serious. “Having regard to the observation 1 have made, it is a fact that those eases are criminal ones in the ordinary sense and they are cases in which the circumstances have to be investigated fully, as, they involve in. one instance the death of two fellow creatures and In the other case, one.” Proceeding to discuss both eases, His Honour added that one could scarcely take up a newspaper nowadays without seeing one or more, or many more, of these tragedies reported.

True bills were returned in the eases Baehe Wright Harvey, alleged reckiess driving of a motor car thereby causing death, and Leonard Douglas Anderson, alleged negligent driving of a motor cycle thereby causing death.

The trial of Harvey was then proceeded. with. The charge is a sequel to a fatality which occurred on the Rangitikei Line at Newbury on January 18 last, when accused’s ear and a motor cycle collided,, Hector Clarence Eggleton and Bertram Cecil Hazelhurst, the driver and pillion rider, respectively, of the motor cycle being killed. Accused, a farmer of Wav- 1 erley, was driving from town and the Itwo deceased were proceeding to Bunnythorpe when the fatality occurred at a road intersection, LIGHT CALENDAR. (Per Press Association. —Copyright.) 4 AUCKLAND, This Day. “This is the lightest aalendar I’ve had to deal with in Auckland during a period of nine years, ’ ’ said Sir Alex. Herdman today in his charge to the Grand Jury. “There are but 13 cases in all, and one only, a charge of murder, is really serious. If the number of eases to come before this sitting of the Court is accepted as a test of crime, then the people of the Auckland district arc to be congratulated on having a law-abiding community.”

Addressing the Grand Jury at the opening of the Supreme Court, Mr Justice Adams said he could not congratulate them on the very low character >of the calendar which included several sexual eases. There wasaniuy dictmcnt against Joseph Reginald Wilson of an alleged series of thefts from shops and warehouses. Wilson was n member of the Police Force at the time the 'offences were alleged to have taken place. Quite a lot of goods disappeared and they were found in the possession of a young woman to whom Wilson was engaged.
