FRIESIANS FOR BEEF
EARLY FATTENING URGED,
At the Maungakaramoa cattle sale on Tuesday last the top price realised was £l3 2s fid per head for two Friesian-,'Miorthorn steers bred by Mr Garnet Child. The fact that the two heasts wore aged 23 and 2o months, respectively, disposes of the theory that cattle with Friesian blood will not fatten young.
Mr Child inform.;,! your correspondent that they hud been running with sheep on the Tanglima mountains until the middle of August, when they wore put on good pasture.
In reply to a question, Mr Child said he had a pure-bred Friesian steer the same age, which had not been on such good feed, but he was confident that the animal would he fit to kill in the autumn. A prominent Whangorei butcher, present at the sale, said he -thought the Friesian would fatten early alright if it was not allowed to puffer a check, and, inter alia, strongly advised farmers to get all their stock fat whilst young, whatever the breed, as butchers did not like the big heavy cattle, and it was a far better paying proposition to get £lO for fats at two-years-old than to hang on to them for another couple of years and only get £1 or £2 more.
