ONERAHI NEWS
PERSONAL,
Present visitors to the township include Airs. Lewis, of Auckland, who a.rived, last week, with her family, and is a holiday guest of her parents, Mr, and Airs. .1. Connolly. As a former popular Onerahi girl, Airs. Lewis has heaps of old friends to look up and is busy renewing acquaintances.
Mr. and Airs. Chitty returned home hist week after a very jolly vacation tour, ending with a week spent at Tauranga as the guests of Air. Courtney, the latter’s brother, and Airs. Courtney. The return journey was made by ear, Mr. and Airs. Courtney being of the party, who found the roads in a rough state after the rains. Mr. and Airs. Courtney, before returning home to Tauranga, are putting in a short holiday visit in Onerahi. Mr, F. C. Frogley left for Auckland on Friday for a well-earned holiday. He will put in a 10 days’ sojourn in the metropolis, visiting his many friends and faking a respite from business cares. GUV FAAVKES’ DAY. Time honoured custom held undisputed sway in Onerahi on the night of November For weeks the youngsters with strictest self-denial in the matter of ice-creams and lollies, had scraped together the uttermost penny to supply ammunition for the festival, and. my word! they did themselves famously. Squibs, Catherine wheels and Homan candles lit the twilight in all directions. Bonfires blazed to heaven in ruddy glow and the hissing tails or sky-rockets shot the sky with dazzling lines of sparks. One bonfire, out by
Noon’s, where a cleared paddock was saved up for the occasion, covered an
area of 5 acres. Bursting crackers re* sembled a f usilade of machine-gun tire, whilst the louder banging of bombs did duty, very well, for the detonation of big guns. Add the excited shouts of youngsters and not a few adults, and the old soldier, for the time, might well fancy himself back on the Western Front. It was a ripping good time. Old Guido, in life, was himself a bit of a pyrotechnist, and, if the smell of gunpowder, the smoko of burning wood, and the, shouting readied him in the Valhalla to which he has gone, he must have felt flattered at One rallies commemoration of his mundane effort. Was his poor old shade, as excited, and did it enjoy the demonstration as much as our boys and girls? 1. wonder. PROPERTY CHANGE. I understand that Air Shepherd has concluded a sale of his' fornier farm to -Mrs MdMasters, of Kamo, who intends to take up residence there for the future. Mr and Mrs Shepherd, in the meantime, are in occupation of Mr Froglcy’s house, next the Town Hall, in Domain Road. SHEEP FOR LIMESTONE. Interest wag evoked among strollers on the waterfront, on Sunday by the transport of a targe flock of sheep over the channel to Limestone Island. The ‘transit was made by barge, several trips being necessary, and the work was in the capable hands of Mr P. Mason. .Some hilarity was caused by the reluctance of the timid animals to embark for a sea voyage, and the determined efforts made by many to break away and escape. However, all were got aboard safely and the transportation was effected without the wetting of a single woolly. ;
