(Australian Press Association.) (Received 8.36 a.m.) ADELAIDE, August 21. There was ideal weather for the first qualifying round of the open golf championship today. Thefo were 83 1 1 competitors. 'The holder of the title, Fred Popplewell, took 86 on the morning round. Jx large gallery followed Ivo Whitton, Rufus and Stewart, whose scores were 75' and 77 respectively, but the ' New Zealander, Sloan Morpeth, took , pride of place with W. Qorry (N.S.W. professional) With 73. Morpeth played beautifully, finishing as strong as a lion with a brace of fours, one of which came at the 500 yards’ seventeenth hole by a clean straight drive, a Number 1 iron and , two putts. After this the other four was easy. His card read 36 —37. Morpeth, who had been ill for a few days, putted accurately, thus saving 7 hole’s, otherwise the result might have been disastrous. For example, he put his Number 4 iron through the green at 'the third and made a chip shot from 16 yards for three. W. Carry also returned with 73, Ed. Bissett 74, Whitton, Nettlefold and Heard 75, James and McDowell 76, Stewart, Quirk and McMahon .77, Eyre, Morrison and Apperley 78, Hatter sley, Russell and Woods 76, Mclntosh 81, Shaw 84.
