NOTED BREEDER GONE.

ME J. F. REID. '' ! (Special-to “Northern Advocate.’’) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. By the death of Mr J. F, Reid, which is reported from North Otago, the Dominion has lost one of its noted breeders pf thoroughbreds. He wai the eldest son of the late Mr John Reid, of Elderslic. It was at Eldorslie that he commenced his stud, but after some years he removed to a neighbouring North Otago property, where in more recent times he conducted the Burnside Stud, while his more widely known brother, Mr J. -B. Reid, carried on at Eldorslie. Vanguard was Mr J. F. Reid's early stallion, but it was when Stepniak was “Loi’d of the Harem’' that he became really prominent as a breeder. Gipsy Grand shared the honours with Stepniak for a time, while, later, Rokeby and Solferino were two imparted sires at his stud. Iv more recent years he did not retain a sire at his stud, which had been greatly reduced, but utilised the services of KilbrOney, Weathervane, and other imported horses who were at Elderslie.

Madder was the most notable brood mare owned by Mr J, F. Reid. This Australian-bred matron produeed-a long line of good horses,.lncluding Madrigal, Rose, Madder, Rxjbia, Munjcet, Mungista; All Red, Ukraine, Cronstadt and Rose Red—all by Stepniak. Several of this lot, were high-class performers, All Red winning two .Auckland Cups, while Munjeet jivas one of the most brilliant sprinters of her day. It was not only through their own deeds that 1 they .were known to fame. All Red sired a, large number of smart gallopers, while his sisters produced winners. Rose Madder was the dam of Sea Pink, a good performer over a journey. Mungista produced-Indigo, who dead-heated for the New Zealand Cup. Rose Red left several, useful gallopers, ami Ukraine was- the. dam of Sasanof, with a Melbourne Clip and a' New Zealand Cup among his many successes. Eoscday, Solfanello, De (buna and Foo Chow were other good winners bred by the late Mr Reid, but the list of successful' perforamis produced at liisVud coiud be exAndel indefinitely.
