ANNUAL MEETING,

The annual meeting of the Portland Horticultural and Industrial Society was held in the Portland Hall on Friday night. Mr A. C. Whitham presided over a fair attendance. The secretary, Mr Eric Hay, presented the following report;—

“Ladies and Gentlemen. —I have much pleasure, on behalf of the committee, in presenting to you the third annual report for your consideration. The show held on December 6, 1928, was a great success and quite eclipsed cmrprevious efforts. As predicted in the last annual report, entries were a record, totalling 1023 as against SOI in 1928, and 815 in 1926. Exhibits were received from Waikato, Auckland and all parts of the North. The judges 'commented most favourably on the quality of the exhibits, this being', especially good in the schoolwork and; vegetable and cookery section. The display dn the garden produce wa 9 very fine, the number of entries being more; than double those of the 1927 fixture. It is most pleasing to the committee to; note the increased interest shown by local residents, and also the large attendance of visitors from Whangarci] and surrounding districts. The visitors! commented upon the excellent display! I and lay-out of the show. The Portland! Rose Bowl, donated by the directors ofWilsons (N.Z.) Portland Cement, Ltd.,; for annual competition, was, last year,; won by Mrs S. 'Crawford, of Maqngaka-, ramea, with 88 points. The receipts; amounted to £57 8a sd, and expenditureij to £56 17s 6d, leaving a credit balance!] of 10s lldi' Assets are valued- at £2sj 5s 6d, with liabilities nil. Our sincere] thanks are due to Mr T. Hv Wilson and? M r F. Bhodes for. their able assistance, given at all times, to* the judges wh.p] willingly gave their- services, to the donors of special prizes and* donations; and- the exhibitors: and all others who in any way helped the society during the past year. It was resolved to hold this year's show in the first or second week of December, the exact date to be decided by the. committee. A scheme for membership subscriptions was outlined by Mr Just. The secretary was* authorised to ascertain the cost of printing Kn connection- with the show and; to report- to the first committee meeting.
