UNEMPLOYMENT

COUNTRY POSITION IMPROVED.

PUBLIC WORKS POSITION.

(Per Press Association.—Copyright.)

AUCKLAND, This Day,

; Replying to • a deputation claiming that the unemployed .position in (Auckland was worse than ever, the Hon. E. A. Ransom said he understood from his report that the position was getting better. He knew it was in the country. The figures showed tlqat the position was not so serious as it was several months ago. Complaint had been made, he said, that the Government was putting men off. As far as the Public Works Department was concerned, the only men it had put off were those on works that were finished. He hoped to be able to announce in the near future that the Government was arranging for men to be employed on work more reproductive than road work. By speeding up certain programmes he was able to put 150 men on roads work near Taumarunui right away. He would like the men to be carefully selected and the most deserving sent.

He was informed that men had left work in the country and come into the towns, taking relief work. That sort of thing must be stopped.
