WHITE OR BROWN?
BREAD CONTROVERSY RESUMED
RESEARCH COMMITTEE FAVOURS WHITE.
ESSENTIAL FACTORS DISCUSSED.
(Australian Press Assn. —United Service.) (Received 0 a.m.) . LONDON, .Tunc 11.
The old controversy of white v. brown bread is likely to be revived by a report issued by the .Medical Research Council, containing the investigation of Dr. R. A. MeCanee and Dr. R. D, Laurence, . of King’s College Hospital, who say that undoubtedly white flour is the better source of energy, for it contains a higher percentage of starch than brown. In the latter some starch is replaced by cell membranes of a very indigestible typo. Proteins are derived from bran which do not rank in nutritional value with animal and other vegetable proteins. The laxative value of wholemeal bread is not greater than any other Laxative.
