EARLY MORNING BLAZE

FIRE AT FISH SHEDS. BRIGADE’S STRUGGLE. A serious conflagration occurred early this morning, when a largo fishdrying shed owned by Mr G. Akast, and situated at the end of Lower Cameron Street, was practically destroyed by fire.

The alarm was first given at about 2.50 a.m. The brigade, though promptly on the scene, had a. hard struggle, and it .was over two hours before the •oiubrcak was subdued. Over SOO feet ■of hose had to be run out, owing to the absence of plugs at the lower end of the street, despite the valuable timber mill and buildings in the vicinitv. The fire originated in the smokehouse. Though' the building was very considerably damaged, a dynamo and refrigerating machinery were saved. ;

The building was covered by insurance to the extent of £7OO. The damage is estimated to be between £OOO and £4OO.
