SALE OF WORK. A sale of work was held on Thursday, May 16, at Portland. Tile effort was organised by the 'Catholic section of the “cement town” to raise the funds necessary to purchase a mass !outfit for use at Portland. The excellent sum of £SO was handed over to Father Herring aftoV .meeting the necessary expenses. The committee are very .grateful to all who so generously gave material and financial assistance. A pleasing feature of the function was the help given by prominent members of other denominations.

The sale of work was opened in the afternoon by the Rev. T. Herring, .R.M., Whangarei, assisted by Father Casemac, also of Whangarei. In a short address prior to declaring the function open Father Herring expressed great surprise and pleasure upon seeing sueli a magnificent display, the hall, which is a largo one, being well filled with stalls. He thanked all for the way they had worked, especially those members of other persuasions who had helped so well and ensured success. Father Casenac briefly endorsed the remarks of his Parish Priest, and wished all a happy and successful day.

The various side’ shows and competitions proved to be a great attraction. During the evening a. large crowd was present, ami evidently enjoyed themselves. Special attractions were wrestling and ball punching. The match between the Terrible Turk (L. Horry) and tho Greasy Greek (K. Pemberton) ended in a draw. Each contestant gaining one fall. A clever exhibition of wrestling was given bv Masters C. Forbes and A. Lorrimor. An exhibition of ball punching was g/ven by the gym. instructor, Mr Magee, accompanied by Messrs W. and J. Cotter, on the accordion and piano.

The stalls and stall-holders were: — Fancy, Mrs Anderson and Airs .Johnson; lollies, Mrs Cahill and Airs Trackeray and Lindsay; cakes, Mrs Carr and ■Berry; produce, Air* Blake and Al'il[ehel I; Junil.de, .Mrs Scelly and Aliss Cotter; amusements, Air A. Andersen Mr B. Carr and Air W. Williams. The committee consisted of Alesdames M. Carr, Andersen, Johnson, Tooth, Blake, Cahill, Scelly, Lindsay; Miss Cotter; and Messrs A. Andersen, B. Carr, J. Doherty, W. Williams and [A. J. Magee (secretary).
