A Melbourne message says that as an outcome of the intervention of Sir William McPherson, the Premier of Victoria, the 'timber strike may be settled shortly. It is understood tha; the men are prepared to' return to work on the basis of a 48-iiours’ week, which has been the chief obstacle to scjtitle-j»ent, providing further inquiry is made whether the industry is a'ble to afford a return to the 44-hours’ week.

At the City Police Court today, .lock Garden, Charles Reeves and M. Ryan, the two latlter Communist officials, were fined £lO each, or in default a month in gaol, for having taken part in a procession without having obtained the permission of the Police Commissioner.

The procession was held on April 22, in connection with the timber strikers’ demonstration against Judge Lukin. The three convicted men, along with two others who were fined £1 each, elected to go to gaol, ns they boasted they Would.
