SCHOOL CARNIVAL

HORA HORA PAGEANTRY. I .HUGCESsPFL venture. OVER, mI OBTAINED. Blue skies and genial temperature favoured the grand carnival at the Horn Horn Behool yesterday afternoon, in aid of the fund for the improvement of the school grounds, and quite in keeping with the weather was the large assembly of parents and friends who attended in response to the appeal for help. Undoubtedly the objective was a worthy one, as it is the intention of the School Committee to re-lay the paths and large assembly ground of the school in asphalt, an improvement that will add considerably to .the comfort of the pupils, and the beauty of the existing surroundings. Spea'king prior to the official opening, the Mayor, Mr L. J. Brake, expressed his great pleasure to be present at the ceremony, and he congratulated the.promoters upon the excellent afternoon provided. Mr A. J. Murdoch, in officially declaring the earniyal open, urged those present to enter into the spirit of the occasion, and they would have the benefit. The staff deserved praise for the beautiful surroundings of the school, but it was to be hoped that these would be even better.

The most pronounced .feature of the carnival was the prize competition among the children for the best decorated vehicle, and a .big entry of over 3i) varieties ,was received. Some of the decorations were truly ingenious, displaying both a .sense of art and originality, utilising the limited scope offered by a child's trolly or doll's perambulator to its fullest estent. Parading round one of tho lawns, the decorations presented a very pleasing-pic-ture.

Mr and Mrs- A. Price afcted as judges, and they placed the winners in the - following positions:—Valda Gavanagh (perambulator) 1; Margaret Prichard (tricycle) 2; Jean Kemp (scooter) 3, A special .prize presented by Mrs J; Donaldson for the most original effort, and judged by Mrs Donaldson ; and Mrs Murdoch, was awarded to Kola G-oodi-son with a -perambulator cleverly representing an ambulance. In the main school buildings and at the various points in the grounds were competitions And stalls. 'The needlework stall was id charge of Miss CoOke; sweet stall, Misses Barker, HiggiriSon and Mason; vegetables, members of committee. Mr A. Dickens exhibited a splendid selection of dahlias. The afternoon tea was in charge of the wives of the committeemen, assisted by several other ladies: The naildriving competition, under Mr 11. Monkhouse, chaimstepping Controlled by Mr J. Marshall, and several weightguessing competitions, supervised by Mr 0. H. MCKeiiiiC, wefe well patronised. MrsL. j - . Brake, with a bran-tub, did good business. In the school buildings there were also exhibitions of work by the pupils.

It is expected that as the result of .the effort over £3O profit will ibe obtained.
