The annual meeting of the Whangarei Fire Board will be held next Wednesday. The Whangarei High School girls are holding their annual sports at the baths this afternoon.

By two games to one Mrs Davey (Remuera) yesterday morning defeated Mrs Bruce (Remuera) in the final of the singles 'Championship of ,the Auckland Croquet Association’s •tournament.

A Supplementary Gazette issued last night draws attention to the provisions of the Animals Protection and Game Act, supplying a list of protected birds, native game, sanctuaries and open seasons etc.

Several heats for the Whangarei High School boys’ sports, which are to be held next week, were decided on the school grounds today. The tracks are in good order consequent upon careful preparation by the boys, ami should contribute in no small measure to a successful meeting.

The Whangarei Harbour Board decided today to purchase a miniature cup for presentation to Mr N. P, Jack, who has won the Harbour Board Cup Race at the Oncrahi Regatta for two years consecutively. The policy of the board in the future will be to supply a handsome trophy .each year, instead of financial assistance to the regatta.

The number of vessels entering the port of Whangarei last month w - as 80, of a totalled registered tonnage of 11,013, bringing in 2932 tons of cargo and taking out 11,853 tons. During February 1928, a total of 72 vessels, of a tonnage of 9181, unloaded 1501 tons and took out 9780 tons. The revenue dropped from £1205 6s 6d in February .1928 to £112.1 17s lOd last month.

Fire, at Terrace End, Palmerston North, at midnight, destroyed the contents of a grocery store leased by H. J. Kjar, also damaging the building. The residence adjoining was saved. The insurance on the contents was £BSO, but it does not cover the loss. The building is owned by Mr A. B. Rowlands, Auckland, and the insurance thereon is unknown.

Twelve vessels berthed at the Onerahi wharf, during the past month. The quantity of goods inward amounted to 760 tons and outward' 986 tons. The cargo consisted entirely of coal, and, the inward coal being Government property, returned, no .(lues. The total revenue collectable was £133 14s 2d. Expenditure were made up of wages £22 3s Bd, interest £ls, depreciation £l2 10s, leaving a profit of £B4 0s fid. Members of the Harbour Board this morning considered this to be very satisfactory, allowing ample justification for the purchase of the wharf.
