OPEN VERDICT
HILDA JOHNSON *8 DEATH,
POISON ACCESSIBLE
(Australian Press Association.) (Received 9 a.m.) "SYDNEY, March 13. The inquest was concluded today at ••Newcastle concerning- the death of Hilda Johnson, aged 15, who died on December 29 after eating some choco/ates. Harry Lord, storekeeper, stated in evidence that Harold Perris, employed by him, had access to a drawer where poison was kept for killing rats. After hearing other witnesses the coroner returned an open verdict.
The Newcastle police on February 2fi obtained an adjournment of the inquest referred to in the message in order to enable them to take a. certain course. Detective Ryan informed the coroner that he had heard’ from two youths employed at the post office that they had been offered some chocolates on' the night of the girl’s death by one Harold Ferris. The youths said Ferris had casually remarked: “Yon need not eat them unless yon like, because they have boon in a pocket where I had some poison.” They di<3 not oat them.
