A STRIKE ENDED
WILSON’S COLLIERY DISPUTE
WORK RESUMED TODAY,
A settlement has been effected in the strike at Wilsons Colliery, Hikurangi, owned by Wilsons l Cement, Limited, and the men were to. commence work today.
Trouble occurred at the mine on Wednesday of last week, when the men failed to turn up to work, bringing operations to a standstill. The dispute arose over the taking of two men off the coal face and replacing them by shift men. Exception to this action was taken by the men. About .170 men were idle as a result of the strike. The township was in an unenviable position during the period of the strike, as over 200 men are out of work, due to the flooding of the Hikurangi Coal Company’s mine. Thus both the large coalmines in the district were not worked for the time being.
