THE BANK RATE
PEAR. OP FURTHER. Riots. FINANCIERS PERTURBED. (Australian Press Association.) (Received 12.32 p.m.) LONDON, March 4. Financial circles are displaying some anxiety regarding the possibility of a further advance in the bank rate. Money has been so dear in New York that the London branches of the American banks have been paying 8 per cent for six months’ deposits, and 6;} per .cent for three months. Fears are therefore entertained that the Bank of England may find difficulty in making the 5j per cent bank rate effective to protect its gold.
