"LAMB” MONTH
FREEZING WORKS' BUSY,
EXPORT VALUES ADVANCE
(Special to “Northern Advocate.”) AUCKLAND, This Day.
Most of the freezing works in the Auckland province ar'e now killing lambs at capacity to meet the demands of a remarkably eager market overseas. The quality of the stock coming forward has never been better and the London market is about 2s 3d per carcase better than at this time last year.
Of the three works operated by the Auckland 1 Farmers’ Freezing Company, those at Southdown .and Moerowa are killing “at top.” The Horotiu works are not quite as busy, but are still dealing with a steady stream of fat lambs. At Southdown alone 3000 lambs per day are being
slaughtered and at Moerewa 1800 per day.
The freezing industry, so far as this company is concerned, is giving employment to over ■ 540 men, with a weekly wages roll in excess of £3OOO. In addition there is the extensive activity of the Westfield Company. December is pre-eminently “.lamb” month, and killing at the present heavy rate should continue until the middle or end of January. Killings of mutton and beef will not become very, .substantial before then, •
“Although it is yet too early ..in the season to give statistical information of much value <on the po'iiU, there- is no doubt that the fat lamb trade of the province is developing, ” said the manager of one freezing company. The lambs coming forward are of excellent type, and export, values so far have been in advance of those of last season.” ’
