At the Oamaru Magistrate’s Court this morning, Leonard Walter Cooper, pleaded guilty to the theft of letters at the Kurow Post Office and burning down the Post Office; breaking and entering and theft at Oamaru, and several lesser charges of theft. He was committed for sentence.

A conference of representatives of the Country Party in the Bay of Isla'nds electorate is being held at Ohaeawai this afternoon to decide what should be done in regard to the election of Captain Rushworth as M.P. for the district. Up to the time of going to press, the decision of the conference had not been announced.

Only two more days remain in which to forward nominations for the principal events in the athletic section of the Waipu Caledonian Society’s annual sports gathering to be held at Waipu on New year’s Day. Nominations, accompanied by nomination fees, must reach the secretary, Mr J. N. I. McKay, Waipu, by 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 22.

This afternoon a 'Whangarei Thursday Trades Cricket Club team, reinforced with several 'Saturday players, is playing Maungakaramoa in the country centre. On their own wicket Maungakaramea are a particularly hard team to beat, and there are no keener cricketers in the district, although the ties of farming keep them out of competition play. A Wellington telegram says that in the hairdressers’ dispute heard before the Conciliation Council, agreement was reached on all points except the day of the half-holiday and a small matter in connection with deduction of wages which the parties desired should bo referred to the Court of Arbitration. The officers report that most of the main roads are in good order, and the information they have collected should prove useful to members of the association who have occasion to go North, or who will be taking touring holidays through the district this summer. The officers returned south via Waipoua.
