Olaf Christian Earlson, aged 53, sentenced to 12 months’ gaol at Auckland on Monday, for breaking and entering,. was' found dead in a cell this morning with a severed artery. The Whangarei Amateur Swimming Club held its usual weekly club night at the school baths last ‘ evening. No races for the Club Cup were held, the proceedings being confined principally to instruction.

The body of A. H. Gascoigne, a Solicitor of Cambridge, was recovered from the Waikato River on Monday afternoon near Huntly. An inquest was held and a verdict of suicide, while in a state of mental depression, was returned.

The annual four-oared /boat ra.ee, Christ’s College versus Wanganui Collegians, was rowed at' Wanganui yesterday over a mile course.. The weather and water conditions were perfect and the visitors won by a length and a quarter, after an excellent race.

Mr Daugherty, a commercial traveller from Christchurch, was picking foxgloves at Larrikins Hill, Kpmara, with his mother-in-law yesterday, when he suddenly fell down a 70-feet shaft. A rescue party with a rope got him out after some difficulty. He sustained injuries to his head and side | and was taken to the Westport Hos- j pital.

'Speaking at the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last evening, Mr A. R. Crane referred to the growth of postal and telegraphic business in Whangarei. This had warranted the department in raising the office to a higher grade. In this connection Mr Crane expressed gratification that the postmaster, Mr G. H, Morrish, had also received promotion and been allowed to remain in Whangarei, for he had proved himself a most approachable officer, who had done -everything possible to promote the interests of the office and the public. Mr Crane also spoke of the growth of railway business and expressed the hope that the station, like the post office, would be advanced, in grade. If that were -done he trusted that Mr Burns, the stationmas-ter, would remain in Whangarei, for everything that had been said of Mr Morrish as a public servant could be said of Mr Burns

Judgment in the ease of Dominion Motors Ltd., v. John Fleming and ,Ha rah Jane Fleming for a claim of £2OOO was delivered by Mr Justice Adams in the Supreme Court, at Christchurch, this morning. The action was dismissed.

A. tax?, driven by William Parfitt, collided wdth a, train at Broadway crossing, Pieton, where a fatality recently occurred. The car was smashed, but the driver escaped miraculously. Five trucks were derailed, damaging the permanent way.

The old Hebrew Synagogue on The Terrace, Wellington, lis being demolished to make way for a new brick and concrete structure costing £II,OOO. The Synagogue was bniilt about 1874. The foundation stone of the new building will be laid about the middle of next mouth.

A youth of 17 years appeared before Mr A. Carter, J.P., at the Whangarei Police Court this 'morning, charged with unlawfully knowing at Kamo, on November .11, a girl under the age of 10. He was remanded to appear at Whangarei on January 21. Bail was fixed at £25, and accused was ordered to report Jo the police every evening.

An amusing series of miscalculations was indulged in at the annual prize-giving of the Whangarei School last night. The chairman, Mr A. H. Curtis, remarked that the children were about to break up for a five weeks’ holiday. Mr A, J. Murdoch, M.P., said: “I am going to give you an extra week and a day holiday,” while the headmaster, Mr C. F. Collins, remarked: “I am going to go one better and give you six and a half weeks’ holiday,” The first and second speakers had miscalculated the exact duration of the vacation.

Rounding a bend on the Helena Bay Road on December 5, lorries driven by Marino Glucina and W. H. Stirling collided. The result was a court case which occupied practically the whole day at the Whangarei l Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Gjlucina sought to secure £44 15s Id from .Stirling, who counter-claimed for £l6 7s 6d, A great deal of controversial matter was introduced, Stirling alleging that, Glucina had been eating sandwiches when steering round the corner, and Glucina swearing that Stirling and his witness had been drinking. The Magistrate adjourned the case until January 22, when judgment will be given.

William H. Franklin, released on probation for a bleach of the Bankruptcy Act, appeared before Mr J. H, Luxford at the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court oil ‘ Monday'. The police stated that the original order for restitution Was made at the rate of £6 a month for three years, but this had later been varied to £2. A pleasing Christmas party was held in the Y.M.C.A. buildings last evening, under ,thc management of the Y.M.C.A. Social Committee. The concert hall had been cleared and decorated and tables arranged round the walls, The central space being left free for dancing. Mr C. Taylor officiated as M.C. The first toast honoured was .that of Mr E. Stain ton and Miss D. Meek, who arc shortly to be married, and they were the recipients of several, beautiful gifts from the Ambulance Division and the Y.M.C.A. The itoast of Dr. Ward was proposed by Corporal Sargent, and Dr. Ward I was also presented with a. case of pipes from the Ambulance men as a token of their esteem. Other toasts honoured were “The Ladies,“ proposed by Mr W. A. Cole and responded to by Miss M. Reed, and “The Social Committee, ” sponsored by Mr E. F. 6. Sharp and responded to by the chairman. Father Christmas was much in evidence during the evening, each guest receiving a gift from a well-laden tree. Approximately 150 persons were present, and between toasts dancing was indulged in, !
