The New Zealand Golf championships commenced yesterday at Balmacewan. The gale overnight died to a light northerly. The course is very hard and the greens fiery. It is a very representative gathering of the cream of New Zealand golf, with two exceptions, Arthur Duncan, among the amateurs, and E. J. Moss, professional and present holder of the
open championship. The first round of the open championship is decided by four rounds. Medal play commenced at 8.30 c’clock in conjunction with the first qualifying round of the amateur and professional championships, the first 32 amateurs and the first 8 professionals, respectively, qualify.
