HEAVY DAMAGE DONE. (Per Press Association.—Copyright.) OAMAEU, This Day. The biggest tire for,nearly ten years occurred at 4.30 o’clock this morning at the Wlaitaki building, of two storeys, in Tham'es Street, owned by W. Aickenhead, draper. The damage is estimated at about £BOOO. Aickenhead’s shop was gutted and the stock is a total loss. H, Grenfell’s mercery stock was badly damaged by water. J. Martyn’s cycle and sporting stock was damaged by water; L. Frame, hairdresser, stock and fittings destroyed; Misses Cartwright, three pianos, furniture and music destroyed, also the stock, furniture and fittings of J. Gumming, tailor, Mrs, Gibson, dressmaker and W. Brown, commission agent. The fire is believed to have started at the rear of the building. A heavy wind made a hard fight for the brigade. Aickenhead’s shop and upstairs portion was gutted. The insurances are: —Aickenhead, building £4OOO, stock £3200, He will be a heavy loser. Grenfell, stock £1500; Martyn, stock £575; Cartwright, furniture £245; Frame, £150; Brown, Gibson and Gumming’s fittings were insured for about £l5O. « Ts your property insured against fire?
