THE ELLEESLIE TROUBLE.

n PUBLIC’S RESENTMENT. 3 1 j INQUIRY HINTED AT. ) Public happenings are quickly refleet- ' ed in Parliament, ami the racing disturbance at Ellerslic provided a topic j for Mr W. E. Parry (Auckland Central) I in the Appropriation Bill discussion in i the House of Representatives. 'The member took strong exception to the racing authorities imputation that the crowd was “a howling mob.” This he said could be disproved ,‘by the police, who could testify' that it was very orderly indeed, and in no way a menace. The people resented very ■much tlie'se: imputations, and he, as well as other Auckland members, had received telegrams from very reputable people protesting against it. Looking over the loading articles of the Auckland Press he felt, that they I did not view the 'attitude of the racing authorities as being very wise. The “Auckland Star” had covered the situation i n, a very broadminded way, and it, showed one important aspect—that wise management would have forestalled trouble. It pointed out that the action of the racing authorities in' starting the steeplechase while the crowd was on the course was dangerous . and amazingly foolish. He fc.lt that the ‘Government would be well advised ■to secure a public inquiry into the ‘ matter. '

The Prime Minister: Let if drop! It is all right. I cannot see anything to bo igained,'

Mr Parry: That' is all very fine, but a large section feel that they have not been treated fairly, and a section lost a considerable "Aim of money.' He thought that some*'arrangement could be made which would obviate such hap ; penings in the future. , Mr Potter; They need another system in case of a non-start, TROTTING AFFAIRS, MEETING OP THE BOARD. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. At yesterday's meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Board reports were received in connection, with the'application to have the horse Don Zolock removed from the schooling list. After discussion it was decided to ask the owner of the horse to arrange with Mr A. Commons, stipendiary steward, to have an exhibition start made with other horses on the Auckland track before a final decision was reached. The remarks made by Mr W, E. Thompson, president of th? New Brighton Trotting Club, in which he said that the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association had sought to defeat the rules under which the club acted, have been withdrawn by Mr Thompson. This statement was made when the club was considering the Free Advice case and ..Mr. Thompson was called upon to appear before the board to show cause why- lie should not be dealt with under the rules of trotting. As a result of his withdrawal the board decided to take no further action in the matter. » WAIKATO RACING CLUB.
