Rain interrupted cricket matches on the first day throughout the country.
Marylebnne in the first innings scored 203 (Mitchell 60, Barnes 62). C. Hill-Wood took 5 wickets for 82 runs. In the second innings M.C.C. made 28.1 for 0 wickets, declared (E. H. Holmes 70). Oxford University first compiled 316 (Kingsley 82) and in the second innings 265 for 5 wickets (A. Crawley 101, Barber 72). Oxford won by five wickets. Kent started with ,337 (Ashdown 58, Hardinge 00), and in the second strike 4 for none. Worcestershire’s first innings closed for 123 (Freeman 4 for 60). The follow-on innings realised 21 5 (Freeman 6 for 85). Kent won bv ten wickets.
Nottinghamshire in tho first innings made 134 (Robinson 4 for 47) and in the second 329 for .9 wickets, declared (Whysall 107, Payton 117). Yorkshire commenced with 125 (l.evhuul 62—Larwood 6 for 24), anid in tho second made 198 for 4 wickets (Sutcliffe 95). Notts won on the first innings. Hampshire’s first innings realised 334 (Kennedy 52, Mead 130—Peach 4 for 64), and tho second 187 (Mead 60—Fender 5 for 50). Surrey’s compilation was 399 (Sandham 122, Fender 94, Peach 68), and the second 72 for 2 wickets. Surrey won on the first innings. Essex commenced with 165 (Jnpp 5 for 43), and in the second strike made 138 (Jupp 4 for 35 and Thomas 4 for 40). Northamptonshire’s first innings produced 267 (Woolley 53—Eastman 4 for 69), and the second 37 for 1 wicket. Northants won by nine wickets.
Lancashire notched 235 in the first innings and in the second 144 for I wicket, declared (Watson 51). West Indies began with 10S (Iddon 4 far 40), and at the second venture made 178 for 2 wickers- (Roach 82, MartTh not out 77). The match was drawn. Lcvcsou Gower’s eleven opened with 242 (Miles-Howell 00—Allan 7 for 74). and in the second innings put up 403 (Howell 04, Arnott 58, Bettingtoo 118, Calthorpe 50—Allom> 5 for 100. Cambridge scored 172 at the first attempt (Wykes 50) and 334 at -the second (Longrigg 81, Morgan 07. Duleep Sinhji 00). Ley os on Gower’s team won bv 130 runs.
For Warwickshire against Leicestershire, Parsons scored 110 and Wyatt 74, Burnell taking 0 wickets for 71 and Partridge 4 Sidwell was'not out 102, Dawson 79. Warwick won. Somerset made 220 in the first innings (Rippon 09, Earle 52—Tate o for SOI, and in the second 239 (A. E. Rippon 53, Ingle 01—Bowlev 0 for 92. Sussex in the -first innings made 3.90 (Bowley lu7, 'Sellars 119, Tate 90 — Hunt 7 for 118), and in the second 73. for 4 wickets. Sussex won by 0 wickets. Gloucestershire amassed 053 for 0 wickets and declared (Dipper 188. Sinfield 52, llammon not out 218, Barnett 80). Glamorgan scored 201 (Bell 00, Riches 03—’Parker 7 for 79. Rain stopped the -game. Gloucester won on tlie first innings.
