IX Meikb, A. T. Brainsby and L. W. Nelson. SHOPPING WEEK. A letter of thanks from the secretary of the Shopping Week Carnival for the assistance rendered by the council in regard to cost of illuminations was received, and it was resolved by the council to thank the committee for its donation of £SO towards the expenses incurred.

PUBLICITY MEASURE. A circular was forthcoming from ihe Auckland Advertising Club relative to an illustrated descriptive booklet of Auckland city and province, stating that the cost of production and distribution would be approximately £IBSO. It was suggested that the council should contribute £4O. As an amendment to the Mayor’s motion that the letter be received Cr Brainsby moved that it be deferred lor further consideration, as he thought it might be advisable to have Whangarei mentioned in the booklet. 'The motion, however, was carried. LOANING ENGINEER’S SERVICES. With further reference to the request by the Russell Town Board that, Mr W, J. Dawson, electrical engineer, be allowed to make a report on the possibility .of electrical installation at Russell, it was explained that all that was wanted' as a preliminary was a short report, which Mr Dawson could make after a week-end trip. In connection with the council’s readiness to lend his services for £25, the board would be prepared to enter into a more comprehensive scheme, if the first report appeared -to be satisfactory to the town authorities. It was therefore hoped that Mr Dawson would be allowed to make the preliminary report, the Town Board bearing all expenses.

As Mr Dawson was quite conversant with conditions at Russell, CT Rust suggested that he should prepare his report in Whangarei.

‘‘We are all anxious to assist the smaller local bodies when we can, but there is a principle at stake to which I ithink we should all 'adhere,” said the Mayor, when suggesting that the ]«tter be referred to a small committee, a course which was adopted.

Cr Meikle expressed the opinion that it meant a week-end job, which was a small matter, and ho submitted that the Mayor should be free to do as he liked in regard to it. STREETS DESIGNATION. Name signs for •streets, said the Mayor, had been painted, and at his suggestion expenditure of £2B was authorised in payment of having them affixed. THE LIBRARY EXTENSION, Items in the Library Extension Committee’s report, which was adopted, included moving the exit doors on the left side of the ground floor of the Town Hall to the opposite side. Also that plans be prepared to convert the ladies’ lavatory in the Town Hall into a public lavatory, with entrance through the .main building, and that Cr Foote confer with the architect. KING STREET IMPROVEMENTS. Fifteen ratepayers of King Street wished to know' when the council intended to have the footpaths put in a condition in which they could be used by the womenfolk and children, instead of having to use , the road. Reference was made to an arrangement entered into by -the vendor and the council in regard to liability.

The reply proposed by the Mayor, and sanctioned by the council, was that the work referred to was one of a number earmarked to be undertaken as urgent when the time was suitable. TURNSTILES AT PARK GATES. By adoption of the Legal and Finance Committee’s report, the council agreed to contribute £25 towards cost of turnstiles at Kensington Park. MORE SUBDIVISIONS.
