APPLE MARKET
CHILEAN COMPETITION,
SPLENDID CONSIGNMENTS.
DOMINION TRADE RIVALLED
(Australian Press Association.) (Received 11.40 a.m.) LONDON, July 2
New Zealand apples by the lonic, Port Adelaide and Somerset sold as follows:—Stumers, 10/ and 12/; Delicious, 12/ and 14/; Jonathans 13/ and 14/.
There was an interesting development in the fruit trade on the first arrival of Chilean apples, the quality of which surprised and pleased Covent Garden experts. The apples mostly exceed three inches in diameter, and comprise Newton Pippin and White Winter Pearmains, all beautifully clean, showy fruit, especially Hoovers. All were well graded and attractively packed, although too big for English requirements, realising 14/ and 15/ a case. One importer says that if Chile sends apples of 2] to 2A inches in diameter she is likely to become a serious competitor against the Dominions, as the seasons are concurrent.
