COALMINE EXPLOSION
SIXTY WORKERS GASSED.
ONLY SEVEN SURVIVORS.

A lire in the shafti of the Eoehelameliere coalmine at St Etienne caused a violent explosion in a gallery filled with workers. A dozen escaped, but between 40 and 50 are missing. It is believed that many were burned to death. A later report says that <SO working in the mine were all gassed before assistance could be given. Twelve revived, but 48 were dead when brought to the surface and five others have expired since.
