WHANGAREI APPOINTMENT

MR. WEBB RE-ELECTED, t

At the annual meeting of the Whangerei County Council, held at noon ! today, Cr .T. H. Hayward proposed that ,Mr Luke Webb, the retiring chairman, be re-elected for a further, term. The mover said he felt sure that Mr Webb done his best in the interests of the county and that he had given general satisfaction.

The motion was seconded by Or A. Stephen, and there being no further nominations, Mr Webb was declared duly elected.

It was a genuine pleasure to him, said the chairman, that after a trial for two years the council should show continued confidence in his conduct of such an important and responsible position. As in the past, ho would endeavour to deal fairly and impairtially with all questions arising and all individuals concerned.

The chairman then referred to the finances, and stated that never in tKe history of the council Had it had so much money made available for road works. The estimated probable expenditure for the current year was as follows: —Riding account, £22,400; Grants, £8000; Main Highways main- , tenance, £10,000; Mangakahia Valley / Road, £1000; Otonga turn-off to county boundary, £6000; roads adjacent to the borough, £16,000; and thirds (in<i 1 . halves, etc., £500; making £63,900 ac•tually avajlable for road work this year. It was the most the council had had, so that there was a strenuous year ahead, but he- felt that it would be a successful one.
