QUEST FOR NEW LAND

POLAR RESEARCH A BLANK,

CHANGE TO SUBMARINE WORK,

(Australian Press Association.) (Received 9.16 a.m.) OSLO, May 21

Captain Wilkins declares that there seems to be no chance of finding any new land of any importance, judging by the result of polar expeditions. He considers that scientific expeditions in future will concentrate on oceanigraphic discoveries, possibly with the help of submarines. There is no reason why they should not voyage from Spitzbergen to Alaska. Captain Wilkins denies that he was invited to accompany General Nobili on the latter’s Arctic expedition. He says that his object in polar expedition is loss to discover land than to obtain meteorological data for the benefit of the world. For example, desires to assist Australia in precautions against drought, thus saving hundreds of thousands of sheep. This is one of the objects of the South Polar expedition. Mr Marconi had assured him that a short-wave system of weather reports .was feasible.
