AREA OF FLAX DESTROYED.

COMPANY’S HEAVY LOSSES.

AUCKLAND, This Day.

A disastrous lire almost,, completely destroyed 700 acres of flax, about eight miles east of Wellsford and owned by Flaxlanijs, Ltd. The estimated damage is in the neighbourhood of £IO,OOO, but the actual loss to the company will probably be much greater, because it has been deprived of a source of revenue for at least four years. The growth, was not protected by Insurance. The company owns about 1000 acres, ■< of which 700 acres are in swamp.— Press Assn,

St#pt by a strong northerly wind an extensive grass fire blazed across the summit of Mount Eden, destroying much of its natural beauty, including many native trees recently planted on the crater. During the height of the fire the mountain, from a distance, resembled an active volcano.—Press Assn.

GREYMOUTH, This Day,

Eire destroyed ' the Totara Elat Presbyterian Church yesterday afternoon, The origin is a mystery; The insurances are unknown.

Early this morning, fire wrecked the fruit shop of S. Mclv-6r, Tainui Street.. The damage to stock and fittings is estimated at £3OO and to the buildings £2OO. The building was owned by Mrs Lynch and the insurances are unobtainable. —Press Assn.
