WASHINGTON, February 4.
Robert Stewart, of Indiana, chairman of the Board of Directors, of the Standard Oil Company,, was arrested tonight, following upon hia second refusal to tell the Senate Oil Committee the disposition of 3,000,000 dollars re the sale profits of the extinct Continental Trading Company of ’Canada, of whfch the Government alleges Mr Fall received over 230,000 dollars.
Proceedings for “contempt’\will bo taken, following his arraignment tomorrow before the Vice-President, Mr C. G. Dawes, in the Senate, if he still declines to answer questions.
There have been but few occasions in American history when the Senate has taken on the aspect of h court of law in meting out punishment to private citizens.—A. and N.Z.
