CHURCH AND STATE
MEXICAN CONTROVERSY.
NO SIGN OF COMPROMISE
MEXICO CITY, January 27.’
‘ A renewed conflict between State and Church in Mexico is indicated by insurrectionary activities in several states. Rigorous military precautions have been taken, along with wholesale arrests of. Roman Catholics in the capital and other large cities. The Government changes the prisoners with having plotted against the State. Suggestions that President Calles and the Archbishop of Guadalajara should meet and seek a compromise have not yet been approved in either camp. It is said that the Hierarchy will hold out indefinitely, in the hope that the Government will come to terms through force of public opinion. q&e .Government, on the other hand, insists upon acceptance of the laws, especially the registration of priests with the municipal authorities, which the Roman Catholics argue would give control of the priesthood to, the State. —A. and N.Z.
