OBITUARY

NOVA SCOTIAN PIONEER

By the death at a private hospital in Whangarei, on Thursday, of Miss Margaret McLeod, aged 82 years, the Whangarei district lost another of the old band of pioneer settlers who came to New Zealand in the barque Breadalbane, which left Nova Scotia on December 25, 1857. Deceased was a daughter of Mr Alexander McLean, who was known by the soubriquet -“Mason,” to distinguish him from others of the same name, and due to his calling as a stoncpiason. The family settled at Taiharuru, in the Whangarei Heads district. The only, surviving member is Mrs A. Mnnro, of Onerahi. About 20 years ago deceased came to Whangarei and resided at Vinetown. The funeral took place today at Whangarei Heads.

GEOEGE SAMUEL SEIVER. j i (Special to "Northern Advocate.’’) AUCKLAND, This Day. The death has occurred, in Auckland, of George Samuel Seiver, aged 84 years. He came to Auckland from London at the age of 16 years and was engaged on a cutter running between Auckland, Russell and northern ports. When the Thames goldfields’ rush started, he tried his luck at gold mining, but 'with little success. Then he went to Kaeo and Whangaroa, where he undertook bush contracts for the Auckland Timber Company, and later the Kauri Timber Company, Ltd. After several years of successful contracting he took up farming. Mr Seiver was keenly interested in horse racing and bred several well-known race horses. He took a prominent part in public affairs in the district, being a member of the Whangaroa County Council, Licensing Committee and School Committee. For the last nine years he had lived in retirement. His wife predeceased him.
