KAURI GUM RESERVE
SUGGESTED EXPERIMENTAL WORK.
When the Hon. A. D. McLeod made a tour of the Bay of Islands electorate a year or more-ago, the settlers of Waipapa, Bay of Islands, requested that the Kapiro kauri gum reserve be made available for settlement.
Recently, Mr Allen Bell, M.P.* again took the matter up "with the Minister, who states that from investigations already made it appears that the land is not at present suitable for bringing into grass, but so far no definite scheme has been evolved for dealingwith the area. A suggestion was previously made that it should be retained until its suitability had been proved by experiment, and it had been ascertained that it could be brought into profitable occupation at a reasonable cost. The matter was referred to the Department, 'of Agriculture, and enquiries are again being made to ascertain -whether arrangements can be made for that department to carry out experimental work. The Minister states that he expects he can give no definite advice as to ■whether, or when, this work ean be undertaken, although his department is sympathetic, to the suggestion made. Upon receipt of the report from the Department of Agriculture the position will be further considered.
