MINISTER IN WHANGAREI

HOX. K. S. WILLIAMS' VISIT.

ITINERARY FOR TOMORROW,

j The Hon. K. S. Williams, Minister ■ for Public Works, arrived in Wha-> jngarei this morning and will remain ; until Wednesday. This afternoon he attended the Whangarei County Chambers and afforded members of the Council an opportunity of placing various matters before him. As the Minister would be available tomorrow to inspect localities connected with proposals pla'ced before him, the county chairman, Mr Luke Webb, invited members this morning to consider

framing an itinerary. Cr. L. A. Johnson asked that it be

arranged that Mr Williams should pay a visit to the eastern part of the county and should see the main road to Parua Bay and the Taraunui turnoff.

Cr. J. A. S. Mae Kay agreed that it was important that the Minister should see that part whevre the roads

j were being destroyed by what was mostly tourist traffic. It wasj important also that he should see fhe road to Pinna, which led to large areas of undeveloped and unsettled land, and ho asked that the road through the | Wairua. riding should be travelled I over. Cr. F. Elliott was pleased ' to note that the Minister was going to travel over the notorious North Eoad by motor car; otherwise he would cafc taiuly have asked thalt he be conducted there. Mr W. Jones, M.P: “I am going to see that he travels over that road.” Cr. Elliott: “Quite right, Mr Jones.”

Mr J. Norris, county engineer, sugj gestcd that the Minister could gothrough Eiponui and Otakairangi and via Hamilton’s road to Purua, and Cr. MacKny signified approval of adoption of that suggestion. [ As an important work was to be undertaken in putting the road from Kiripaka to Ngunguru, Cr. P. McDonald would like Mr Williams to visit that locality. If the road proposed ■was not feasible there would have to be another into the district, which had been very much neglected in the past, and consequently, it was desirable that the locality should be viewed.

It was suggested that a plan be' prepared and submitted to the Minister. It be of much use gding to Kiripaka only, but it would be well perhaps to go to Kaiatea and let the engineer show the Minister the level route from that elevation. After further discussion upon the subject it was decided to submit to the Minister a proposal that he should travel over the Pam a Bay Eoad, then to the Kaiatea hill to view the! proposed road between Kiripaka and Ngunguru, then via Marua to Hikurangi for lunch. In the afternoon the suggested programme embodies a run to Moengawahine, via Eiponui, Hamilton’s Eoad, and Purua, and bach to

Whangarei. t Cr. A. Stephen was anxious that the Minister should, if possible, when southward bound on Wednesday, view* the Taufaroa bridges and the Waiotira —Aruroa road, two matters which he is placing before Mr Williams this afternoon, ;
