Brilliant weather prevailed at Eden Park today for the third stage of the Plunket Shield final match between Auckland and Wellington. Wellington had made 182 in their first venture at the wickets and Auckland had responded with 307 and the visitors had scored 173 for the loss of three wickets when stumps were drawn on Saturday.

Lowry (98) and James (4) faced the bowling of Matheson and Allcott. Lowry got a single to the off in Matheson's first over and then, amidst the plaudits of the crowd, brought up his century with a characteristic off drive from Allcott’s first ball. James was not comfortable with Matheson, who was keeping a perfect length, and the first wicket fell after a quarter of an hour’s play, when he snicked a ball from the ’Varsity p'ayer into the hands of the wicketkeeper: 178—1 —6. MeGirr filled the vacancy, and after a maiden over from Allcott, Matheson had the newcomer well beaten with his first ball, but the delivery eluded both Eowntree and Bow-1 ley and went for four byes. Another i maiden over from Allcott was follow- j ed by one of the prettiest shots of | the match, MeGirr glancing a fast one from Matheson gracefully to the I leg boundary, an effort -which brought a well deserved cheer from the crowd. The fielding was very keen and Player stopped several hot drives from Lowry which with less vigilance would have reached the rails. With the score at 198 Bowley relieved Allcott and 1 the change was immediately success- j ful, Lowry hitting out at the second j ball and giving Anthony, at deep j mid-on, an easy catch: 198 —s—llo.5 —110. j

Lowry had batted for four hours and had hit 13 fours. His only mistake had been a difficult catch .to Cooper when 11 and, although not particularly brilliant, his batting had been very sound, and in the circumstances extremely valuable to his side, tr—Press Assn.

The ball ■was hit with tremendous force, but the coach held it—276-6-41. Badeock brought up his half century with a pretty hook to square leg off Bowley. He continued to hit with exhilarating freedom, punishing Matheson for 12 in one over.

Rountree was temporarily laid out just before lunch, a rising ball from Matheson hitting him on the side of the head, but he plueMly resumed after first-aid was -administered. Cooper had an over just before lunch, but the change had no effect on Badcock, who got a nice four past mid-on, a pretty two to leg and a well placed on-drive for one off successive balls.— Press Assn.
