WELLINGTON’S WINNING POSITION. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Canterbury met Wellington for the Plunket Shield in ideal weather, but lost the toss. Although Hiddlestonc and Kortlang put up 105 for the second wicket and the former went on

to score another century, the next wickets fell fast and Canterbury were doing well till Badeock joined James. As against Otago, these two began to hammer the bowling all over the j ground, and they knocked up 154 in ion hour and a quarter. At one time they scored off 23 consecutive balls. After James was caught Badcoek found useful assistants in the .last two men, and the total was carried to 488, which puts the local side in a losing position.

The chief scores were Badcock 155, Hiddlestonc 114, James 56, Kortlang 55. Bowling figures were: Read 4 for 107, Cunningham 2 for 132, Sandman 1 for 95, Mcßeth 2 for 93. The match was resumed today in fine weather with the wicket in good [order. Canterbury went to the wickets faced with the task of catching Wellington’s 488 score, but did not start promisingly, losing the first two wickets for only eleven runs. Gregory and Page stopped the rot, but the third wicket fell with the total at 46.

Woods and Crawford opened to the bowling of Badcock and McGirr. Off the first ball Crawford scored a single and Woods scored one off the third. Although the weather was fine and the wicket good, low scoring ruled in the Plunket Shield match, Otago disposed of for 155, Daere, the top scorer with 62, was badly run out at against Auckland. The latter were a critical stage. Mills 29 and Player, not out 18, wore the only other dou-ble-figure scorers. Blunt took 5 wickets for 56, Torrance 3 for 51, Dickenson 1 for 45.
