GROUNDS IMPROVEMENT PROJECT. COMPREHENSIVE CARNIVAL. The committee of ladies and gentlemen appointed to organise a grand general carnival to raise funds for improvement of the Horn Horn school grounds, met last Eriday night, those in attendance being Mesdames Richards and Heap, and Messrs G. A. Bthell (School committee chairman), G. Barber (headmaster), L. J. Brake, E. C. Know, H. J. Revell, S. G. Boggs and J. Proctor.

The carnival is to be held in the Winter Show Hall, Walton Street, on the afternoon and evening of Thursday, July 22.

In connection with contests for school children, comprising tug-o’-war for Standard 4 boys, skipping for girls under and over the ago of 13 years, and balloon-bursting (girls and boys), the secretary was instructed to get in touch with all available schools in order to procure as wide participation as possible. Entries for these features are to close on July I‘s. Arrangements for tug-o’-war open to junior and third grade footballers (club teams), seven-a-side, were placed in the hands of Mr Proctor. It was decided that the entrance fee be Is per head (7s per team). Mr Brako’s offer of a trophy for the junior section was accepted with thanks. Organisation of a shingle-hair competition was delegated to Mr Revell.

It was decided'to include in the afternoon attractions a baby show in two classes, respectively for infants under 12 months of ago and between that age and two years, the winners to be decided by popular vote. A lucky sawdust-dip will also be added to the list of allurements.

Added interest in the occasion will be afforded by a spectacular exhibition of Ye Olde English maypole dance, under the expert tuition and oversight of Mesdames Mervyn Wilson and Heap. The committee decided upon the institution of a number of stalls for the sale of sweets, soft drinks, vegetables, afternoon tea and “jumble” goods. A sub-committee was set up to secure the services of stall-holders.

Selection of the following additional competitions w’as made by the committee after discussion of numerous suggestions: Duck pond, fortune telling, top-hat and roll down. Messrs Brake, Bethell and Boggs were appointed an advertising committee, a specified amount being allocated for the purpose, while Messrs Richards, Barber and Reyell Were elected to act as a programme committee. ,

The secretary was directed to write to the Whangarei A. and P. Society, expressing the committee’s thanks for permission granted to use the Winter Show Hall free of charge, except for the cost of lighting.

It was decided that the next meeting of the general committee be held on the evening of July 7.
