SOCIAL EVENING! > A very pleasant evening was spent in the local hall last Thursday. Mr John Thorbum, presiding at the piano, and ; Mr C. Thorbiirn (violin) together supplied appreciative dance music, Mr Dempsey (piano) kindly playing the extras. The following concert items were well received.— l Song, Mrs L. H. Lilley, / “Down the Vale”;- song, Mr Chas. Dmke, “Mellow Moon”; comic song, Mr C. H. Dempsey; Miss Williams, recitation, “Bingen on the Ehine”; Miss C. Hill, recitation, “Be Gollie Bill.” The lucky spot waltz competition was won by Mr J. Wedge and Miss Miller. Guessing the number of beans in a bottle was won by Mr C. Covacieh. Mr Chas. Drake officiate® as M.C. FOOTBALL. The local schools are keenly look-1 ing forward to matches ahead and are spending their Saturday afternoons in practice game*. PEESO£TAL. Messrs C. Eobinson and C. H. Dempsey, from the Heads, are spending a few days’ holiday in our midst. Mr Chas. Eoberts purposes leaving for the United States in company with a friend. Mr J. C. Going, of the Three Mile Bush, has a modem bungalow nearing completion in Whangarei. It is understood that he and Mrs Going are likely to take up residence there. FAEM NOTES. Early potato planting has commenced on several holdings with a view to catching the good prices that usually prevail for early poatoes during the months of October and November. An Australian demand having set in for the past season’s main ■ crops lends bright prospects for high price levels for the early crops. Teams are engaged in preparatory work tilling the land for sowing of i oats during July and August, and, root crops a little later. j
