Ho gave evidence that if ho had given the correct particulars he would havo required his mother’s consent to the marriage, which would not have been given.
Counsel appealed to the Bench to take a romantic view of the case. Earl de Clifford fell in love with a charming girl and acted openly.
The Court held that his action was inexcusable and fined him £SO and 10 guineas costs. —Sun.
The following was cabled from London on March 15.—" Earl de Clifford, who is only 19 years of age, was secretly married at a West End registry office to Miss Dolly Merrick, daughter of a London "night-club queen.” The now countess was manageress of the Manhattan Club in Piccadilly. Mrs Vernon Tate, formerly Lady de Clifford, says she is surprised and shocked at her son’s marriage. Mrs Tate is consulting her 1 lawyers, believing her consent to the marriage of her son is necessary until he is twenty-one years of age.”
