HOCKEY

THURSDAY COMPETITIONS. The Thursday competitions under the auspices of the Whangaroi Hockey Association were advanced another stage yesterday afternoon, when, under verv favourable weather conditions, games were played in both the men’s and ladies’ sections. In view of the approaching representative matches interest in individual performances was very keen, and Whaugam. representation in the IVliite Horse Cup competition should not bo much below the .standard attained in previous years, the play in the ladies’ division being on a particularly high plane. Before flic contests in the ladies’ section commenced, the Maungakaramen and Avoca ladies indulged in a useful practice.

MEN’S SECTION. A CLOSE GAME. What proved to be a very high-scor-ing game was played at Kensington Park wlmn teams representing Huia and Thursday Trades Clubs mot. Both teams have now settled down, and the game was of a very fast, even character, but was marred by rough play on both sides. During the course of the game two Huia players were injured. Gough, who had sustained a nasty knock early in the game, was injured again during the second half and had to retire. Through the courtesy of the Trades Club captain his place was taken by an emergency, and "so both teams played throughout -with a full complement. Early in the first half, Hannam scored for Huia, and immediately afterwards, B. Moore equalised. Huia attacked again and Gough finished off a good movement by scoring. Huia maintained the -advantage, against repeated attempts by Trades to equalise, until just before half-time, when Dunn made the scores two all. Trades had attacked for the greater part of the spell and were unlucky not to have added to their score on several occasions. The second half was a gruelling one, with Huia having slightly the better of exchanges -throughout. Connell scored early for Huia, but late in the spell Archer shot the equalising goal, and it was left to Hannam -to put the issue out of doubt, by piercing the strong defence just before the final whistle. -Scores—Huia 4, Trades 8. Mr. W. N. Jack was the referee.

LADIES' SECTION.

HIGH SCHOOL DEFEATS MAUNGAKAEAMEA,

A great deal of interest 'was focussed on No. 3 ground at the High School, where the Present girls met and defeated the Maungakaramea team. The High School girls had all the better of the first spell, and during that time Miss E. Tibhets shot two goals and Miss Hayes one for them. Early in the second spell Maungakaramea attacked and a few minutes after the opening Miss J. Harvey penetrated the High School defence with a fast shot. The game after that was of a very even nature, fluctuating between the two circles, and at times becoming very fast. However, no further score •was recorded, and the game ended three to one in favour of High School. Mr. G. Larking handled the whistle. OLD GIRLS v. PRESENT B. The game between Old Girls and High School Present B, contested on No. 2 ground, was not productive of so many stirring incidents as w T as the other match. Old ‘Girls’had the better of the game throughout, and the score would have been much larger in their favour if they had not infringed so frequently when in handy positions. For Old Girls, M. Bartley, W. Lamb, and K. Cullen (2) scored. The Present Girls were very weak in circle play, but their backs acquitted themselves quite well. Mr. W. N. Jack refereed.
