Men are yet employed in finishing the drains along the new road -between Whangarei and Waipu across the Ruakaka Flat, but all the metalling has been finished, and, although the roller is still being used, the road work is practically completed.

It has been arranged that the Whangarei High School and Mt Albert Grammar School will play their annual Rugby football fixture at Eden Park on August 14, as a. curtain-raiser to the representative match between Auckland and North Auckland.

The estimated exports from Wliahgarei Harbour during,May amounted to 13,106 tons, and imports to 1804 tons, both showing a falling off in comparison with last month’s returns. The closing of the Hikurangi coal mine ha's had a considerable effect upon the exports.

A man who celebrated the halfholiday yesterday not wisely, but too well, found himself in the Magistrate 's Court this morning on a charge of drunkenness in Cameron Street last evening. The police stated the man had a job to go to at Okaihau, but owing to the low ebb in his financial condition he would have to walk there. Mr E. L. Whimp, J.P., who was on the Bench, convicted and discharged the accused, who forthwith set out on his tramp up North.

The Whangarei Harbour Board’s suction dredge did 115 hours’ actual dredging last month, and the crew was also engaged for 41 hours in clearing obstructions and effecting repairs, A length of 600 foot of the Hihiauq channel was dredged, and approximately 17,000 c. yards of spoil were pumped ashore. The grabdredger worked for 13 days building a stop-bank, 5 days pulling mangrove stumps, and 4 da vs dredging the main channel, while 2 days were occupied in repairing the bucket and one day in watering and coaling. As far a.s can he gauged by Air F. W. Tothiil, of the Whaugarei Labour Bure.au, the amount of unemployment in this town lias decreased slightly during the past fortnight. This is probably due to men having been put upon relief work.

Accounts passed for payment at the meeting of the Whaugarei Harbour Board this morning totalled £.1,093 18s, of which £453 4s 3d was out of Gencral Account and £SBO 13s 9d from Loan Account. After meeting those payments, the General Account had a credit balance of £1745 9s 9d, with £SOOO at fixed deposit, while the Loan Account was in credit to the extent of £2905'11s 4d, with £20,000 at fixed deposit.

Through having so many country teams playing in the, senior Rugby competition this season, only one senior contest has eventuated at Kensington Park week by week. However, Kensington Park tomorrow is to bo the von no of two seni or games—Mangakaramca v. Kamo and Mangakahia v. Hikurangi.—besides several junior and third grade fixtures which will bo contested earlier in the afternoon.

Members of the Whaugarei Harbour Board this morning considered the proposal to obtain a private bill vesting the waters of the Whangaruru, Whananaki and Tutukaka harbours under its control. At present the board has wharves at all three ports, but the waters are under the jurisdiction of the Marine Department. It was stated that a different procedure obtained from that adopted previously to attain the end, and consequently the matter was left in the hands of the board's solicitors, members having expressed a desire that the vesting be done by a separate bill in preference to being included in the Wash-ing-Up Bill.
