CRICKET ASSOCIATION
NORTH AUCKLAND ENTITY.
MEETING OF DELEGATES,
Another move towards the formation of a North Auckland Cricket Association was taken last night, when a meeting attended by delegates from all the sub-unions was held in Whaugarei. Mr F. J. Dargaville was elected to the chair, presiding over the following:—Messrs E. A. Vipond (Rodney), J. M. Dawson (Mangonui), J. Smith (Northern Waiioa) and J. Lees (Whangarci), the last-named acting as treasurer and secretary. When a largo number of visiting cricketers were at Whangarci during the course of the successful Easter tournament last month, it was decided, at a well attended meeting, to form a North Auckland Cricket Association, and the meeting held last night was convened to draw up rules and regulations governing the newlyformed body. While in Auckland recently, Mr J. M. Dawson interviewed Mr Stallworthy, president of the Auckland Suburban Association, and elicited the information that that body was quite agreeable to the formation of a separate association for the North.
The idea the delegates had in view was the formation of an association under the direct control of the New Zealand Suburban Association. This would entitle North Auckland to challenge for the Walker Shield, and would mean that northern cricketers could gain representative honours in North Island and Now Zealand teams. “It is said that the ‘demon bowler,’ E. A. Spoffortlv was born in the Hokianga district,’’ said one of the delegates. “Why, then, should not the North produce players that can take their place in first-class cricket?’’ As in previous years, each Northern sub-union will affiliate with the Auckland Suburban Association direct. It is now within the power of each separate sub-union to challenge for the Pratt Cup, and for the Dargaville Shield, a handsome trophy donated for competition between the northern centres by Mr P, J. Dargaville. Eules and regulations were drafted at the meeting and are to be distributed among the various sub-unions for consideration at a general meeting to be called in the last week of November.
