TREMENDOUS DOWNPOUR

RIVERS IN FLOOD. TAUMARUNUI, This Day. A tremendous downpour last night caused rivers to rise rapidly this morning. The Wanganui river was not greatly affected -by flood waters, although running much above normal level, but the Ongaruo river wms high and carrying much debris, wdth the result that the Taringamotu bridge was carried away at 11 o 'clock, this morning. This means that communication north of Taumarunui by road is now cut off. A bridge at the same place was carried away by last year’s floods. The stock bridge at Napier’s farm in the Taringamotu Valley was also washed away. Fortunately rain ceased about four o’clock this morning, and has held off since. Had rain' continued, the Wanganui probably would have risen to a dangerous height.—Press Assn.
