INVASION OF SANCTUARY. - (To the Editor.) Sir, —On Sunday last my attention was drawn to the sound of firearms being discharged in the b.ush on tho Western Hills or Coronation. Park, and vicinity. It should bo well-known that this bush is a Government Forest and Scenic Reserve also a sanctuary for native birds and fauna. I think greater publicity should be given to this latter fact by moans of advertisement in papers directly interested in this district, and by public notices distributed throughout tho bush. It is to be hoped no person or persons have been foolish enough to destroy any of the native birds or animals which have their habitation therein.
The writer frequently visits this bush, and has seen many native birds which are reported to be scarce in other parts of the Dominion, among which may be mentioned, the Kaka, Tui, Pigieon, Miromijo, Piopio, N.Z. rail, Riroriro, Grey Warbler, Blue Wren, Cuckoo, Fern Bird, pied and black Fantails, Ruru, Weka and others which lam unable to name. I have also seen two pairs of the Australian Minah bird. The whole of these birds are absolutely protected. Any person killing or taking any of these birds is liable to severe penalties under "The Protection of Game Act" 1922-24.
In order to ensure further protection of our native bird life and fauna in the reserve, I should think that the
appointment of an honorary Warden or Wardens, with full legal authority to take action against offenders, would be ot an inestimable value. Before the schools close this week for the term holidays, may I respectfully suggest that the Principals and teachers take the matter up, and impress on the children the evil caused by the wanton destruction of our native birds and animals.
Thanking you for the space occupied and apologising for the length of my letter. —I am, etc., FRED W. TOTHILL.
