BOARD OF GOVERNORS MEETING.

Tho Board of Governors of the Wha* ngaroi High School mot last evening, Mr. W. A. Carruth presiding over an attendance of Messrs. J. D. McKenzie, D. A. McLean, J. I. Wilson, H. C. Rishworth, H. W. Crawford, R. C. M. Harington, P. Higginson and A. B. Charters, principal. Mr. Charters acted as secretary, owing to the absence, through ill-health, of Mr. J. McKinnon, UNAUTHORISED EXPENDITURE

EXCEEDED. The Controller and Auditor-General wrote reminding the Board of the secretary’s assurance that the matter of excers unauthorised expenditure would be dealt with at a future date. In reply ho was agreeable that the matter should stand, over until the end of this month, by which time he hoped it would bo satisfactorily settled. This was in connection with expenses of a deputation to Wellington, and at Mr. Rishworth’s suggestion the matter was held oVer until next meeting, as meanwhile Sir James Parr would be interviewed on the subject. ONBRAHI JUNIOR SCHOLARS. A letter was received from the Auckland Education Board asking upon what authority the children of the fifth and sixth standards of the Onerahi School were instructed to attend the Whangarei High School. In discussion upon this letter the chairman said that it had been generally understood that the Onerahi children were to be included.

The principal, stated that' in November the Department asked how many Junior High School pupils would be coming from Onerahi, and he had ascertained the figures and telegraphed them forward. Subsequently it had been stated that the Onerahi children would not attend the High School, owing to the difficulty of travelling. Thereupon the principal had replied that, if they were to attend, they must do so - at the beginning of' the term, and not later on. The fesult was that 15 pupils had enrolled. After discussion, Mr. Crawford moved that a reply be forwarded pointing out that, in the estimate of the number of children who would attend, the Junior High School, Onerahi had been included. It had always been understood that Onerahi was to be included in the area. The motion was carried. HOSTEL WATER. SYSTEM.

An offer was receive 1 by the Board to instal a twin boiler, and an electrical element of 2000 watts to be used in conjunction with it, in the hostel. The price was £45, and the firm guaranteed a remedy of the prevailing unsatisfactory system. The principal described the system, apd stated that at present it was only possible to get two baths of hot water. The boys carried hot water to the baths, but the point was stressed that next year the hostel would accommodate girls. After further enquiry into conditions, Mr Crawford moved that the chairman and Mr McLean should com fer with Mr W. J. Dawson upon the matter, and the motion was carried.

ADDENDA. According to terms of a lease, Messrs Heather Bros, are entitled to have their house (which was leased from the Board), painted every five years, half the cost being borne by the lessors. Their offer to provide labour if paint and brushes were found, was ac-’ cepted. Correspondence in reference to the visit of Sir James Parr next Tuesday was read. It disclosed the fact that Lady Parr would not be able to accompany the Minister. Sir James also wrote: “You will notice that I have resigned the Eden seat, but I will still be Minister of Education for some weeks. ’ ’ , Notice was received from the Director of Education that Mr H. E; G. Smith’s appointment as, head of the languages department had been approved.
