HIGH SCHOOL RACES.

What is intended to bo the forerun

nor of an annual swimming tournament in connection with the Whangarei High School, took the form of a short series of races held at Mair Pool yesterday afternoon. Pive events were scheduled «n the original programme, namely—Under 13 years, championship, of 50 yards; junior championship, under 15 years, of 100 yards; senior championship, of 100 yards; and relay races, day boys v. boarders, senior and junior, respectively. This programme was extended, however, through the courtesy of several gentlemen present, who voluntarily undertook to supply two additional prizes for senior and junior handicap events. Following are the results:—

50 Yards Championship, under 13 years—C. Bevington 1, Eccles 2, Painter 3. The winner led all the way and won by three yards. Time—29 l-ssec.

100 Yards Senior Championship,— Bisseit 1, Dudley 2, Burkhardt 3. A splendid race and a close finish, in which the winner’s better judgment prevailed. Time—s 6 4-ssee.

100 Yards Junior Championship.— Hollows 1, Webber 2, Yates 3. Another fine race, with little difference between the placed boys. Time—6l 3-ssec.

Relay Race, Day Boys v. Boarders, Junior—Day Boys (Hollows, Yates-, Webber and Windust) 1, Boarders (Foote, Jones, C. Cross and H. Williams) 2. The Day Boys soon established a lead, which they had little difficulty in maintaining.

Relay Race, Day Boys v. Boarders, Senior—Day Boys (Dudley, Burnet, E. Brainsby and Burkhardt) 1, Boarders (Bisset, Lewis, Millington and A. Kelly) 2. Dudley, the last Day Boy to start, was left with a few yards to spare. Bissett, however, challenged gamely and provided an exciting finish.

Junior Handicap, 50 yards—W. Clarke, 3see, 1; Eccles, 2see, 2; Cross, 4see, 3.

Senior Handicap, 100 yards—Dudley, scr, 1; Bisset,, scr, 2; Cossill, 6sec, 3. Dudley and Bisset stood out in this, race particularly as swimmers of calibre much above the average, furnishing as'fine a race as one could wish to see.
