GRAVE TROUBLE LOOMING
AT AUSTRALIAN PORTS.
DEMANDS UPON SHIPOWNERS.
(Received 9.15 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day
Serious trouble is threatening between the waterside workers and shipowners throughout Australia. At a conference of watersiders, to be held in Sydney during May, comprehensive log wages and conditions, including complete preference to unionists, alterations in the system of picking up and rotary employment, will be drawn up.
Demands will be served upon shipowners direct in every port of Australia, and the men will negotiate direct with the owners outside the Court.
Meanwhile the watersiders have already begun to enforce their demands by di-eet action. In Melbourne the stevedores and watersiders decided to abolish afternoon pick-ups, and the shipowners have been compelled to engage all labour wanted in the morning. —A. and N.Z.
